Scunthorpe Zine Fest, to our knowledge, is the first Zine event put on in the town and will be coming back for a second year!Coke-Oven is a proud sponsor of Zine events but with Scunthorpe being the origin of our namesake it seemed apt that we would play a part in founding and funding a Zine shindig in the town. We hope to bring out the creative and counterculture of the area and hopefully draw in other makers from across the country!

Our aim with the event is to give people the space, the opportunity and agency to create and express their voice.

We believe Zines are a great way to do that.

2024 will be the second year of the event which we are hoping to continue annually, so we are looking for any and all to get involved. Scunthorpe Zine Fest 2024 will take place on August 3rd 2024 in Cafe Indie on Scunthorpe High Street. Where there will be people tabling to show off their Zines from the majority of the day!

So, whether you’ve been debating making one, have never heard of them or are an avid Zine maker/collector we hope you’ll pop along and support the first show. More info of who will be tabling and details of the day will be available later in the year and through our Instagram!

Regards,

Scunthorpe Zine Fest team

Zine Fest F.A.Q’s

We’ve tried to pre-empt some of the questions you may have below, but should you have something else to ask just drop us an email at scunnyzinefest@gmail.com

How much does it cost?

Attending the event is free, with no entry fee and stall holders will be selling their zines on the day. Tabling at the event is on an acceptance basis. After applying and if accepted, there is will be a fee though we always keep that fee low to just cover venue hire.

Where is it being held?

Please see the map above. The event this year is being held at Cafe Indie on Scunthorpe High Street. There is a map and address listed at the top of this page.

Is the venue wheelchair friendly?

We’re happy to say it is and there is an access lift to the upper floor should you need it. The Zine event will be on the ground floor for ease of access.

Will there be refreshments?

Alongside the event the cafe will be open for your food and drink needs along with toilets. Should you feel the want to have a chill, a cuppa and a read of your new purchases then you’re more than welcome to stay!

How can I get there?

Train: The train station is a 10 minute walk to the cafe pretty much in a straight line.

Bus: The bus station is also about 10 minutes from the cafe straight up the high street.

Car: Behind the cafe are two car parks, there is also a multi-storey car park next to the bus station which is a 10 minute walk away. Scunthorpe as standard offers the first two hours parking for free on a weekday and free on weekends so if you’re just popping in you can park up, come for a coffee and a Zine and then head home.

Walking: Cafe Indie is right on the high street so very easy to locate.

When is it happening?

The event will be on August 3rd 2024 11:00AM – 4:00 PM

How do I apply?

Applications are closed for 2024. After which we’ll reach out and inform people if they have been successful. Sadly, we do have a limit on the amount of people we can take so we won’t be able to take everyone but we’ll try our best as we want this to be as engaging an event as possible.

What will be provided for stall holders?

We’re aiming to provide a suitable large table and a chair for each stall holder. If there will be more than one of you or you require special arrangements, simply let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate. Where half tables are wanted we may buddy some people up! We’ll also be hosting a communal table for people who cannot attend and would like to just give away some Zines! We won’t be providing table covers so you’ll need to bring your own if you require a cover sheet.

What is a Zine?

A Zine is a small, often self-printed, self-published document. It often takes the form of a booklet either bound or cut out, or folded. Zines can be about anything. Some are Fanzines which are tributes to film and music and others are more personal, like diaries. But whether you’re making comics or writing literature – chances are at some point in your life you’ve made a zine. Have a look around the Coke-Oven site and you might find some inspiration!

Some are funny, some are sad and some are very serious. But they are mainly an exercise in self expression and artistic discussion!
